Energize your life…

Many people feel stressed due to factors such as not having enough time in the day to complete tasks, lack of energy due to poor nutrition, etc.  It is possible to energize your life and relieve stress with simple lifestyle changes.  Try some of the following strategies:

Manage Stress

When stress is managed well, the mind and body are both able to function in a healthier way.  One technique is to concentrate on your breathing, inhaling with slow, deep breaths through your nose and exhaling through your month.  Imagine calmness entering your body and tension leaving your body with every breath.

March is Kidney Health Month, promoted by the Kidney Foundation of Canada (www.kidney.ca).

Kidneys are vital body organs located below the ribs on either side of your spine.  Kidneys have three important functions:

  • They remove excess water from the body, or retain water if your body needs more.  They also regulate the levels of minerals your body needs to function properly, like sodium and potassium.

  • Kidneys act as a filter, cleaning the blood and removing waste from the body through the production of urine.

Before You Go – Travelling Out of Country

It’s the time of year where many Canadians escape to warmer climates.  If you are thinking of planning a winter escape out of the country in the upcoming months, you should check with your workplace and/or benefits provider to confirm if you and your dependents have Emergency Out of Country Travel coverage.  Here are a few other things to keep in mind as you plan your trip:

Before you go:

  • Make sure you have a valid passport for you, your spouse and your children, as well as any necessary visas you might require.  Your passport should be valid for a minimum of 6 months after you return from your trip.

Drug manufacturer coupons – helpful or harmful?

Posted by:

For many years, companies have used coupons as a way to incent consumers to choose to buy their product over a competing brand.  From cereal to shampoo, companies distribute coupons to get consumers to buy their products.  Drug manufacturers also use this marketing technique, though in a slightly different way than a grocery coupon.

How drug coupons work

When a patient is diagnosed with, or is being medically managed for, a health condition that requires prescription drugs, often, there are a number of drugs that a physician can choose from in order to treat the condition.  Many brand name drugs have generic alternatives that are available that have the same effect in treatment, but cost significantly less than the brand name counterparts.

Wash your hands

This is the single most effective way to prevent illness.  Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.  Germs can grow on bar soap, so choose liquid soap in a pump if you can.  If you can’t wash your hands, use hand sanitizer.
